I’m humbled by the response to my request for help in tracing Mark.
Ever so often we declare our lack of faith in the world. Strangers scare us.
We take shelter in the coccoons we’ve spun around ourselves. Considering
Mark’s gone missing while discovering the big bad world one does feel that the best course would’ve been to stick it at home! I mean one only needs to pick up the paper to understand how dangerous our world is! Terror, Bombs, riots, assault on women and children, genocides in darfur and hunger in Africa..i could go on.. but then that’s not all there is to the world..to our lives
I’m not given to emotion easily but the mails and messages that i’ve recieved have genuinely moved me.
I now know that Mark disappeared around a place called Magnetic Hill which is on the Leh-Kargil-Baltik national highway, about 30 km from Leh (Thanks Bhakti & Kaushal, You guys have earned my respect, i’ve posted your helpful comments below) I’m rushing to the airport now, will post as often as i can. Need to trace the German dame since she’s the last one who saw Mark. Please check my Facebook page for updates in the interim.

Hey,
accidentally reached your blog and saw this post. “Magnetic Hill” sounded interesting so I checked it in wikipedia. It is just an optical illusion that a very slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope. Check this link – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_hill
Thanks,
Sharad
Hey, I’ve read you posts. Now, I have a question, where are you from? I mean, country wise.
There is infact a magnetic field out there. my friensd in Army tells me that often when they cross that spot they also switch off the engines for fun and see the magetic pull take over. But disappearance of Mark is not related anyway to it. He must have strolled over and got lost.
Hey,
I’ve saw this post MAGNETIC HILL and found out that the word holds a big mystery in itself…………a road where the wagon rolls uphill w/o power……and the wagon gains momentum climbing uphill…….. STRANGE….isn’t it…some say its an optical illusion but no1 could understand “why”…….It is one of the major attraction in New Brunswick….!!
May be the solution to this mystery lies in a name………..

I had never heard about magnetic effect at the place mentioned by you but in 1997 I had gone to Karakoram pass(It was a Indian women Expedition from Arunachal to Karakoram pass in six and half months crossing 39 high altitude passes). On that trail the army people use to tell us that crossing Saser la for food dropping by helicopter is expertise task for them, since its magnetic phenomenon. Its something related to geology but I wish you best of luck for tracing Mark. Some detail of that trail from my friend Vineeta’s travelogue
Now my experience about “These guys have earned it”
My husband Goutam decided to go to Deoriatal again and this time with our tent , sleeping bags. I also wanted to go that place but on 1st week of July? I was not sure whether it is going to be clear weather at all(because of monsoon) and if there is rain then trek route may become slippery and it will be difficult for me to trek with my both knees affected with osteo-arthritis. No good photography .
I also little annoyed about Goutam’s back pain. But keep quiet seeing his enthusiasm. We had started from Delhi by state bus at night and changing buses from Hardwar and then by jeep we reach at Ukhimath.Had our quick lunch then to Musturu by jeep. At 2:30 pm we had started our trek. We were not feeling tired even little sleep in previous night).Maximum load with Goutam . I was carrying a nap sack with some food and cloth (very little compare to him).We were going slowly because I was taking snaps of birds and surroundings. We finally reach to Deoriatal via Sari village at 4:30 pm. Weather was cloudy by then. We settled at our tent. After sometime some villagers from Sari went back to their village. We were two only in that place.
That night there was heavy rain with thunderstorm. and we had to struggle literally to put one extra sheet on the tent to prevent little slippages .When rain stops. Suddenly we saw a magical light(this place has no electricity because of sanctuary).Piping through the tent we saw the moon which reflecting in the natural lake of Deoriatal. In a moment I had forgot my pain in knees. Oh! this is heaven!. But in a moment the moon disappear in the cloud. We slept well after that and in the morning wakeup by bird’s musical call and massif Kedar and Choukhamba (Himalayan Peak)with other peaks in our front. I think all this beautiful moments we have got there since we have earned it .Thanks to kind Mother Nature.
