Story#2 GC “A message for Old Hound from the Old School”

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

I’m of old school, my father always said ” keep your nose clean and stay at the grindstone”……it took me awhile, but after the years I did my best to stay clear from trouble (don’t try and take short cuts, do it right or don’t do it at all). we never had a grinding stone……but I did my best to stay focussed on the job at hand no matter the distractions until my day was over, my time of applying my skills , abilities, honesty, friendship and building a block from where to start the next day from, a foundation of my own , a definition of just who I was in the eyes of my peers and the higher power. later in life this became a reputation which preceded me and thank fully it was viewed by all favourably.

By the same token, one could stand on a corner and provide free chocolates to all who wished to have them , and they would probably been viewed as favourably as well…….until you run out of chocolates!

There is a process to “earning it”. It usually involves time, effort, knowledge, skills of sorts, determination, concentration and observance toward others.

funny thing though, if you try excellent fishing skills in a river where no fish are present, all the attempts you want to try will still result in the same conclusion….no fish

Collecting 100 Indian stories on ‘Earning it’..

Monday, July 20th, 2009

I’m in the middle of something i don’t fully understand yet.
My childhood friend Mark is missing. I’m in India to search for him.
He went missing somewhere near Leh. I connected with some long lost
folks in Delhi and the bylanes of Chandni Chowk and have picked up a
clue. and now..get this..i need 100 stories of people who’ve ‘earned
it’  (to know more about what earning it means go here). So if you know of someone / something that has ‘earned it in your opinion – pls post your story in the comments or mail me on theoldhound AT gmail.com  (if your story/episode/mail works for me, trust me i’ll repay your effort and of course i’ll feature it here with your name – nearly 2000 people read this everyday!) Don’t ask me why but it seems like the beginning of this sort of  madness!

Earning it..

Monday, June 29th, 2009

While I’m waiting for Sham, my fishing assistant to buy fuel and stock up the tub, my thoughts go to something i’d heard in connection with the dark chocolate Bournville.. ‘Earning it’, and what it means..

Back in the day, if a chap had pulled his weight, done the right thing and truly deserved the accolades that came his way, he was deemed to have ‘earned it’. It was how gentlemen won the ladies – they earned their love! It also signaled the inclusion of a particular chap into a sorority, into a brotherhood of sorts. If one had to earn the friendship / respect of one’s peers, one had to work hard, there was no easy way around it. The Mafia have a sinister term for it, it’s called ‘making your bones’.

Now why would you have to ‘earn it’ to have a chocolate? How do you ‘earn it’. Sham is here so i’m going to ponder this while sinking some worms into the cold lake, write in if you know how to tell when someone’s earned it

Mr. Holmes, go solve this!

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

What the … isn’t that an American playing the beloved holmes? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1iGEpbDsas&feature=rec-HM-r2 the old man Conan would be absobloodylootely pissed with this one!

Anyway Sherlock Holmes would have been stumped with what I’m gonna tell you and mind you he was no cabbage at all, in fact the bloke could sort some real twisted puzzles, what with the hound of Baskerville and all! So this is the real dosh, the big cahuna, the .. well you get it..

As the geezer informed me, about the legend (real hairy that story) and everything, I figured I might as well get my hands on some of this stuff. Turned out that the counters in Ghana were all sold out on the stuff.

So back on my way (on something called Airninja! Life is stranger than fiction) I checked out my favourite chocolatier. The bloke nodded grimly when I told him about the tale, he had heard of this ‘retribution’ for eating it without ‘earning it’.

Now, it sounded like doff to me. Some tale the newsstand boys must have overheard that the tired geezers had been telling each other while BA sorted out their luggage. But he gave me a critical piece of information, the name – Bournville! Sounded like something out of a Sherlock Holmes mystery. I was suitably intrigued. I was going to find it. And eat it..
