In India, recruiting

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

I’m in India now. Just landed. Met up with an old friend who’s going to help me trace Mark. The cops found Mark’s clothes and some bits and bobs from Mark’s personal effects. Need to go underground for a few days to re-conect with more old hounds who can smell our Mark’s trail. Back soon

These guys have earned it

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

I’m humbled by the response to my request for help in tracing Mark.
Ever so often we declare our lack of faith in the world. Strangers scare us.
We take shelter in the coccoons we’ve spun around ourselves. Considering
Mark’s gone missing while discovering the big bad world one does feel that the best course would’ve been to stick it at home! I mean one only needs to pick up the paper to understand how dangerous our world is! Terror, Bombs, riots, assault on women and children, genocides in darfur and hunger in Africa..i could go on.. but then that’s not all there is to the world..to our lives
I’m not given to emotion easily but the mails and messages that i’ve recieved have genuinely moved me.
I now know that Mark disappeared around a place called Magnetic Hill which is on the Leh-Kargil-Baltik national highway, about 30 km from Leh (Thanks Bhakti & Kaushal, You guys have earned my respect, i’ve posted your helpful comments below) I’m rushing to the airport now, will post as often as i can. Need to trace the German dame since she’s the last one who saw Mark. Please check my Facebook page for updates in the interim.

Earning it..

Monday, June 29th, 2009

While I’m waiting for Sham, my fishing assistant to buy fuel and stock up the tub, my thoughts go to something i’d heard in connection with the dark chocolate Bournville.. ‘Earning it’, and what it means..

Back in the day, if a chap had pulled his weight, done the right thing and truly deserved the accolades that came his way, he was deemed to have ‘earned it’. It was how gentlemen won the ladies – they earned their love! It also signaled the inclusion of a particular chap into a sorority, into a brotherhood of sorts. If one had to earn the friendship / respect of one’s peers, one had to work hard, there was no easy way around it. The Mafia have a sinister term for it, it’s called ‘making your bones’.

Now why would you have to ‘earn it’ to have a chocolate? How do you ‘earn it’. Sham is here so i’m going to ponder this while sinking some worms into the cold lake, write in if you know how to tell when someone’s earned it

Riding on the Legend Reborn

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

I’m off to the lake districts, for a much needed snoozer and some rest, away from this madness. When I searched for some weather update on the lakes this one caught my eye. Imaginatively titled ‘Hazards’, it says ‘high risk’ at least trice in the same paragraph. Clearly a case of overkill or will I find out otherwise? suffice to say my interest is piqued. An old friend has kindly agreed to let me use his cottage up after the Hardknott pass and I think I might even ride out (on the Triumph, what else) there! The Thunderbird has been giving me the you-don’t-care-for–me-anymore look of late! Come to think of it I’m not really leaving the legend behind; the Triumph Thunderbird is also advertised as the Legend reborn

Choco-Real

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Good Morning! Fellow readers!

It’s a bright morning in Yorkshire! The summer is setting in slowly and I intend to work on settling some home truths today!

Read as – Dinner with family, boring uncle and aunts, and the oh-so-crazy little Blake kids, who are somehow reminded of fossils (and comics, like this one http://www.submarinechannel.com/content/killer/) when they see me! Well they aren’t the only ones actually! I think it’s the dust cloud hanging on to my coat tails and the odd experiences I’ve picked up along the way!

Come to think of it, we are surrounded by the unexplained, right from the Pyramids to the origin of life to really tragic, freak occurences like the Air France jet that seems to have disappeared!!

The thing is, if I’m involved, even a harmless piece of chocolate turns into a legend. As  my friend Kapodo was trying to say one cold night in Ghana, ‘the Legend finds you big man, no matter where you go’.

It seemed totally implausible then, I mean a chocolate, with a legend??? Apparently you can’t just buy it, you have to ‘earn’ it, and as if that’s not enough, there’s a ritual to follow – snap it, hear the gentle breaking sound, put it in your mouth and let it melt, don’t bite and so on..

Of course, I now know all about the legend but that’s for later, gotta rush now, need to investigate the funny sounds coming from outside…don’t worry, Uncle George seems to be setting fire to my garage but soon I’ll share a visit to Northern Scotland, to ’see’ the Loch Ness monster!

BTW has anybody heard of any more absurd rituals?
