Mark’s missing!

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Ok this is a distress post. Mark seems to have disappeared! He’s done this before but this is quite something else. He was supposedly riding up to Leh Ladakh in India with this German girl, they stopped for some supplies in Manali and rode up to Rohtang. It seems they halted there for the night and
rode non-stop after that to Leh but a bit before Leh Mark seems to have disappeared into thin air!! (it’s quite literally thin air up there)
The girl on the phone was hysterical so i asked her to get her head around this and call me again in a few hours but if Mark’s trying to pull off a joke, he’s gone too far this time! Will post again as soon as i know more..

Earning it..

Monday, June 29th, 2009

While I’m waiting for Sham, my fishing assistant to buy fuel and stock up the tub, my thoughts go to something i’d heard in connection with the dark chocolate Bournville.. ‘Earning it’, and what it means..

Back in the day, if a chap had pulled his weight, done the right thing and truly deserved the accolades that came his way, he was deemed to have ‘earned it’. It was how gentlemen won the ladies – they earned their love! It also signaled the inclusion of a particular chap into a sorority, into a brotherhood of sorts. If one had to earn the friendship / respect of one’s peers, one had to work hard, there was no easy way around it. The Mafia have a sinister term for it, it’s called ‘making your bones’.

Now why would you have to ‘earn it’ to have a chocolate? How do you ‘earn it’. Sham is here so i’m going to ponder this while sinking some worms into the cold lake, write in if you know how to tell when someone’s earned it

A missed call & The call of the Wild

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Some of you have been writing in saying they’re having difficulty following the slang so i’m explaining things only for this post. Hopefully you’ll realise how annoying (and seemingly cocky) it can be..

http://www.wired.com/culture/culturereviews/magazine/17-07/st_best This piece reminded me of my good friend Mark. The chap’s been over in India for a while and i missed his call in the morning while i was out trying to secure some fishing gear and a tub (that’s a boat for you). The house i’m staying in right now at the Lakes is connected with Mark as well. He cooled his heels here for a bit after getting into some sop with his old man which was after he go in some trouble with the fuzz (that’s cops) over a nifty little dame he was seeing back then. So, i’m here on holiday and missing the action already! Isn’t it tough to be doing nothing? there should be a pre-holiday to help you break into a holiday mood, don’t you think? I’m going to give this one a think while gathering my dinner (that’s fishing for you). any suggestions for a good fish recipe?

Riding on the Legend Reborn

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

I’m off to the lake districts, for a much needed snoozer and some rest, away from this madness. When I searched for some weather update on the lakes this one caught my eye. Imaginatively titled ‘Hazards’, it says ‘high risk’ at least trice in the same paragraph. Clearly a case of overkill or will I find out otherwise? suffice to say my interest is piqued. An old friend has kindly agreed to let me use his cottage up after the Hardknott pass and I think I might even ride out (on the Triumph, what else) there! The Thunderbird has been giving me the you-don’t-care-for–me-anymore look of late! Come to think of it I’m not really leaving the legend behind; the Triumph Thunderbird is also advertised as the Legend reborn

Hidden stories

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

and now the National Gallery (in London, where else) is running a special focus this month on hidden stories and scenes in paintings. Apparently there’s even a trail
that tells you the real story behind the facade of the National gallery.
Thinking of grabbing a quick sandwich on the steps outside (admire the traflagar square and it’s energetic tourists)
and sign up for the story-telling
